COBRA vs. Marketplace: Which Makes More Sense After You Leave a Job?

Leaving a job whether it's a layoff, a career change, or just moving on to something new usually comes with a stack of paperwork, and somewhere in that stack is a COBRA notice most people barely read before setting it aside. It's worth more than a glance, because the choice you make here can be the difference between a smooth transition and a coverage gap you didn't see coming.

What COBRA Actually Is

COBRA lets you keep your exact same employer-sponsored health plan after you leave your job same doctors, same network, same coverage just without your employer picking up part of the bill anymore. You now pay the full premium yourself, often plus a small administrative fee, which is usually a lot more than what was coming out of your paycheck before.

COBRA coverage typically lasts up to 18 months, though certain situations can extend that further.

What Marketplace Coverage Offers Instead

Losing job-based coverage is a qualifying life event, which means it triggers a Special Enrollment Period letting you enroll in a Marketplace plan outside the normal open enrollment window, generally within 60 days of losing your coverage. Depending on your income during the transition, you may also qualify for a premium tax credit that lowers your monthly cost significantly, sometimes well below what COBRA would run you for similar coverage.

How to Actually Compare the Two

  • Cost: COBRA premiums are usually the full, unsubsidized cost of your old plan. Marketplace plans may qualify for subsidies based on your current income, which often drops during a job transition.

  •  Network and continuity of care: COBRA keeps you on the exact same plan and providers. A Marketplace plan may mean checking whether your current doctors are in-network on a new plan.

  •  Timing: COBRA can typically be elected retroactively within 60 days, giving you a short window to decide without a coverage gap. Marketplace enrollment also has to happen within 60 days of losing coverage.

  •  Simplicity vs. savings: COBRA takes less legwork since nothing about your plan changes. Marketplace often takes more comparison shopping but can mean real monthly savings, especially with a lower income during the transition.

A Real Example

One of our clients came to us in the middle of a career transition, without a clear plan for what to do about coverage in the gap. Rather than defaulting to whatever paperwork showed up first, her agent walked her through her actual options and got her set up with a plan that fit her situation start to finish. She's since described it as the easiest and most stress-free insurance experience she's had, largely because someone actually took the time to personalize the process instead of leaving her to sort through the options alone.

How to Decide Which Path Fits You

  1. Estimate your income for the rest of the year. A lower income during a transition often means a stronger subsidy on a Marketplace plan.

  2. Check if you're mid-treatment with a specialist. If continuity of care matters right now, COBRA keeps that intact automatically.

  3. Compare actual numbers side by side. Don't assume COBRA or Marketplace is cheaper look at your specific premium and subsidy eligibility.

  4. Don't wait until the last minute. Both options have a real deadline, and missing it can mean a gap in coverage you can't easily undo.

The Bottom Line

There's no universal right answer between COBRA and the Marketplace it depends on your income, your ongoing care needs, and how much change you're willing to take on during an already busy transition. What matters most is not letting the decision default to whichever option required the least effort to sign up for.
