Turning 26? Here's What Happens to Your Health Insurance

Nobody sends you a warning letter. You turn 26, and at some point that year the health plan you've been on since you were a kid stops covering you. Plenty of people find out when a pharmacy declines their card.

The good news is this is one of the most predictable transitions in health insurance. You know the date years in advance. Here's how to use it.

When Coverage Actually Ends

The Affordable Care Act lets you stay on a parent's plan until you turn 26. What it doesn't do is standardize the exact end date.

Most employer plans run coverage through the end of the month you turn 26. Some end it on your birthday itself. Some run through the end of the plan year, which can buy you months. Marketplace plans generally go through December 31 of the year you turn 26.

Do not guess. Call the number on the back of the card and ask for the specific date. Everything else depends on it.

Your Special Enrollment Window

Losing coverage because you aged out is a qualifying life event. That gives you a Special Enrollment Period, generally 60 days, to enroll in a new plan outside of open enrollment.

Two details matter. You can usually apply before coverage ends, which is how you avoid a gap entirely rather than scrambling after. And the window closes hard. Miss it and you're typically waiting for open enrollment, uninsured in the meantime.

Set a calendar reminder for 60 days before your end date. That single step prevents most of the problems in this article.

Your Options, Ranked by Who They Fit

An employer plan. If you have a job that offers coverage, this is usually your best value because your employer pays part of the premium. Aging off a parent's plan triggers a special enrollment window at work too, so you don't have to wait for their annual open enrollment.

A Marketplace plan. If you don't have employer coverage, this is the main road. In Virginia you'll shop through Virginia's Insurance Marketplace rather than HealthCare.gov. This is also the only place to get a premium tax credit, and since your parents' income no longer counts toward yours, a lot of 26-year-olds qualify for more help than they expect.

Medicaid. Virginia expanded Medicaid, so adults under a certain income level qualify. If you're between jobs, in grad school, or working part time, check this before assuming you can't afford coverage. Medicaid has no open enrollment period. You can apply any time.

A student health plan. If you're in a graduate program, the school plan is sometimes cheaper than anything on the open market. Worth a quote.

COBRA. You can continue your parent's employer plan for up to 36 months under COBRA in this situation. It keeps your exact doctors and your met deductible, which matters if you're mid-treatment. But you pay the entire premium yourself with no employer contribution, so it's usually expensive relative to a subsidized Marketplace plan.

The Mistake to Avoid

Going without. It's tempting at 26 when you feel fine and money is tight, and the individual mandate penalty is gone at the federal level so nothing forces the issue.

The problem isn't the routine stuff. It's that one bad night, one appendix, one car that doesn't stop in time, becomes a five-figure bill with nothing between you and it. That's how medical debt starts for people in their twenties, and it follows you for years.

If cost is the obstacle, price out a subsidized Marketplace plan before you decide. With a tax credit and no parental income on the application, the number is frequently lower than people assume.

What to Do This Month

Find out your exact termination date. Mark 60 days before it. Check whether your job offers coverage. Run a Marketplace quote with your own income. Check Medicaid eligibility if your income is low. Then pick, before the date rather than after.

Turning 26 soon and not sure which door to walk through? We'll walk the options with you and make sure you don't land in a gap.
